Wednesday Nights During Advent Season: Mark your calendars!

Wednesday Night Dinners:
11/30-12/14 | 5:00pm | TBD | amys@fumc-cs.org

You’ve heard of the sights, sounds, and scents of Christmas, but what about those of Advent? Preparing for Christmas can feel like it’s about stringing the biggest light displays, finding the most exciting presents, and baking the perfect cookies. Even though we know it is really about preparing our lives for the coming of the Christ child, we need experiences to keep us grounded in the meaning of the manger.

This three-week session is designed for all: children, youth, and adults. It will have a laid-back feel and will utilize the music, art, and scripture readings from a devotional book called Shadow and Light. Soothing songs of the season and an intergenerational program focuses on being less overstimulated and more connected with our senses this Advent. A Soup Supper will start at 5:00pm ($5.00 per person, $15.00 max per family).

Shadow and Light: Daily Morning Prayer

Mon-Fri, 11/28-12/23 | 6:00am | Google Meets | amys@fumc-cs.org

Winter mornings are cold and dark. This Advent, invite the light of Christ into the shadows. Every Monday through Friday morning (11/28-12/23) at 6:00am via Google Meets, please join First Church clergy and staff for a 20-minute time of scripture and prayer. Our time will be based on the all-church Advent devotion, Shadow and Light. Details on how to sign up to come soon!

All-Church Advent Devotion

Advent is not meant to be a season of doing more. Instead, accept the gift of a slow and meaningful season to rest in God's nearness-and ready yourself for the miracle that Christmas brings.

The entire church is invited to use the Advent devotional, Shadow and Light from Tsh Oxenreider. Some may want to use it as a personal devotion, while others are planning to use it in their Sunday school classes or small groups. You'll see some of the resources pop up in worship, and the children and youth will also use the book as well. The book is available at The Gate gift shop at the church, as well as wherever you buy books. In the book you will find scripture, an opportunity to light an Advent wreath at home, opportunities to listen to music, and inspiration from classic artwork and poetry. If you have any questions, please contact Rev. Dr. Todd Spencer at todds@fumc-cs.org

Women's Study Groups: Upcoming Studies
Mondays starting 11/28 | 9:30-11am | Prayer Room | LAS2735@hotmail.com

Our Advent Study begins on 11/28 and runs for four weeks. No book is needed for this study; it will be a combination of Scripture reading, Visio Divina (Divine Seeing), Discussion, and Guided Meditation.

Beginning 1/9, our study will follow the text What Every Christian Needs to Know About Judaism by Rabbi Evan Moffic, who said “My hope is that these teachings can serve as a way of fostering bonds focused not on the past and the troubled history between Jews and Christians, but rather one looking forward to a future in which we share wisdom with one another.” Participants must purchase their own book. Contact Lori at the above email for more information.

Sunday School Classes

Growing in our faith together is an important part of First United Methodist Church. One way we grow together is by gathering in groups to study, connect, and pray together. People of all ages gather before worship for Sunday School. Whether you are a member or not, you are invited to visit any of our on-going adult Sunday school classes. Our current classes gather at either 9:30am or 10:00am, which makes it easy for you to also attend one of our Worship Services at  8:00am, 9:00am or 11:00am.

In gathering together, we are transformed by God's grace through the study, praying, and fellowship of the class. We invite you to become part of one of our classes so that you may be transformed. Visitors are welcome in all classes.
