Serve and Pray- Rooms For Rubbish August 17th
Five CWL's came to this fourth S&P event. This project is many hard months of work by FUMC member Jeff Walker. Hsi idea was to give the homeless the opportunity to help clean up Colorado Springs and in return, receive vouchers for a free stay at a local hotel. We met up at the church and then walked down to Monument Valley Park to meet up with 8 homeless men. We broke into smaller groups and wlaked along the banks of Monument Creek picking up trash. It was a pretty interesting experience to me, since most of the time I have served the homeless, it was to serve food or donating time at a shelter. It was a new experience to be able to work alongside them and hear how enthusiastic they were about this program. The two men that I walked with, J and J, were both starting to look for jobs and the fact that they might be able to shower and have a place to clean up a bit for interviews was very exciting for them. It made a bunch of us realize how lucky we were to have a roof over our head and family and friends to fall back on during hard times. R4R will be a weekly program at FUMC, so if you would like to get involved, please contact us!
Potluck Picnic at Acacia Park July 13th Eleven CWL's attended the picnic in Acacia Park. We met after the 11 o'clock service and enjoyed each other's company and the wonderful sunny Colorado weather for a few hours in the park. As a whole, the group determined that one of their next events would be a service project with Rooms for Rubbish, a new FUMC partnership program (see events for more details on R4R).
BBQ June 29th A group of interested FUMC members joined us at Adrienne's house to kickoff CWL. We met for some great food and fellowship and brainstormed ideas for upcoming events.
Serve and Pray- Exegetical Walk May 25th In order to gain a better understanding of the neighborhood surrounding the church, CWL's walked around downtown Colorado Springs and answered questions posed to us by Rev. Todd Spencer. We learned a lot about the church's potential role in the neighborhood. After walking around for a couple hours, we met back in the chapel to discuss our observations. We think that the overall experience helped us determine what our group can do and get involved in within the immediate community surrounding the church.
