Preschool Staff and Curriculum - Tuesday, February 26, 2013

Dr. Patricia Lindau directs the Preschool and Mother's Morning Out (MMO) programs.  She brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this position.  Patty holds a Doctor of Education from Harvard University and directed a large downtown church preschool for seven years.  Patty is an expert in developmentally appropriate practices for young children.

FUMC Preschool and MMO has re-articulated its vision and curriculum. We aim to provide a whole child wellness model that centers on relational spirituality. Under Rev. Dr. Leanne Hadley's guidance, teachers integrate spirituality into their classrooms during daily sacred time.

First United Methodist Church Preschool & Mom's Morning Out

The First United Methodist Church Preschool and Mom's Morning Out are ministries of First United Methodist Church, Colorado Springs, Colorado.  We are dedicated to surrounding children with a loving, safe environment where they will grow in their love of self, others and learning. These play-based programs respect and nuture each child's innate creativity, spirituality, curiosity and desire for competence and connection. Most important, we want to foster a relationship with each child and their family that promotes trust and demonstrates God's love.

We believe that each child is a gift of God - a special, unique, and precious person - valued for their own intrinsic worth.

Preschool Program

You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.
~Luke 10:27

Preschool:
FUMC Preschool is play-based program for children 2 1/2 to 5 years of age from 9 am to 12:30 pm. Based on their age, children are enrolled in a 2 1/2 year old class, a 3 1/2 year old class, a 4 year old pre-kindergarten class, or a Young 5s class (see below). Our program successfully partners with parents to nurture and facilitate a relationship with each individual child that promotes creativity, critical thinking, literacy skills and cooperation. Based on relational spirituality, children experience prayer, stillness and wonder in their day-to-day activities as well as during specially designated sacred times. Children bring a lunch and eat together at the end of the morning.

Using the whole child wellness model this program is designed to enrich your child physically, spiritually, cognitively, emotionally, and socially. Students gain important classroom and socialization skills that are critical for a positive transition to elementary school. Children gain confidence academically as they learn about numbers, engage in science experiments, literacy and prewriting activities as well as process-oriented art.

This state-licensed program offers keypad safety and a cleanly environment in a convenient downtown setting. All classrooms are equipped with child-sized sinks and child-sized toilets to support and encourage self-care and toilet learning.

Optional Before and After School Care may be offered when enrollment minimums are met.

Young 5s:
This class is specifically designed for older 4 year olds and young 5 year olds to prepare them for Kindergarten. Junior Kindergarten offers a more academic curriculum. Children attend Monday - Thursday mornings.  With four consecutive days of class, children benefit from a consistent routine making the transition to Kindergarten easier. In addition, the schedule allows time for children to develop and work on projects that captivate their interest. At the end of the morning, children enjoy eating their lunch together. This program is offerered with a minimum enrollment of 8 children.

What is the difference between Preschool & Young 5s?
Older 4 year olds and young 5 year olds are ready for new challenges.  An added day of school allows for greater depth and diversity in the curriculum and greater social opportunities.  If you have questions, please feel free to call Patty directly at 719-884-2500.

My son has enjoyed every day!! FUMC Preschool emphasis is on play and socialization which are both so important at this age. It has been wonderful to watch my child develop in a warm and loving atmosphere. I would highly recommend FUMC Preschool!
~ Dr. Melissa Ewer, Pediatrician

FUMC has been such a blessing to my children and our family. My husband was deployed and her teachers couldn’t have been more supportive. They had so many wonderful ideas and just compassion for us. I don’t know what we would have done without them. Ms. Mena & Ms. Crow rock!
~ The Erlandsons

Sending my little one off to school is a big step, which fills any mom and dad with anxiety, excitement, doubt, and wonder. Our transition to FUMC was a sure step for both of our sons. The teachers and administration were always very informative, staying in touch about our sons’ progress. I felt like we had found a perfect fit. Both of my sons seemed to thoroughly enjoy the time they spent in class and came home with stories of their daily adventures. They mad friends, learned basis skills, learned to love learning, exploring and enjoying each and every day. Many thanks to FUMC for a wonderful experience.
~ Lindsay and Scott Murdock

Our daughter, Erica, has grown so much with Mrs. Lucas—socially she has become so much more confident and adventurous. She absolutely loves coming to class each day. She has been introduced to so many new experiences that have enriched her life in such a positive way. Thank you for all you’ve done for our child.
~ The Halvorsons

Olivia has enjoyed all aspects of her time here at FUMC. Holy and Sacred time she has enjoyed very much. She talks about it when she gets home from school. Thank you for the fantastic experience.
